The Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital

The children’s cancer centre is within the paediatric department of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre, Southern Malawi. It is the largest government tertiary hospital in the country and receives referrals from all of the southern part of the country and even more widely. Blantyre has no district hospital and so the QECH also serves the population of Blantyre. All medical care is free.

The QECH is the clinical base for training medical students and medical specialists in the College of Medicine. The Paediatric Oncology ward was established in 1995 by Professors Molyneux and Broadhead (then Head of Paediatrics) with 16 beds and currently has 23 beds with over 200 new patients being treated each year from all over Malawi.
